Frequently Asked Questions

Wrinkle Relaxing Injections (Botulinum Toxin Type A)

What Is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum Toxin (Bo.tox.) is a specially prepared naturally occurring purified protein that originates from bacteria. It is used in a simple non-surgical procedure that smoothes deep and persistent lines across the forehead, between the eyebrows and crows feet on the side of the eyes, by immobilising various facial muscles.

How Does Botulinum Toxin Work?
A minute quantity of Botulinum Toxin is injected using a very fine needle concentrating on the forehead muscles and muscles around the eyes. It blocks the message from the nerve to the muscle which results in the muscle relaxing, creating a smoother, more relaxed look. The treatment can take between 2-14 days to achieve maximum results.

Are Botulinum Toxin Treatments Safe?
Botulinum Toxin has been used safely and widely for over 20 years in the NHS for a variety of muscular problems. It is licensed for treatment of lower limb spasticity in children as young as two years old. Cosmetically, it has been used to treat facial lines and wrinkles for over 15 years. In the United Kingdom alone, more than 250,000 treatments are carried out every year. This extensive experience confirms the established safety profile of treatment with Botulinum Toxin.

Are Treatments Painful?
No. For most people it feels no worse than having their eyebrows plucked. A local anaesthetic is however applied. You can resume normal daily activities immediately after the treatment.

How Long Do Treatments Last?
The effects of Botulinum Toxin last about 4 months after which repeated treatments will be necessary. Most people find that after their initial 3 treatments the effects of Botulinum Toxin can be longer lasting and may only require treatments twice a year. Most patients can further benefit from combining Botox treatments with a good home care regime and chemical peels.

Do Botulinum Toxin Treatments Have Side Effects?
There are few, albeit rare potential side effects to Botulinum Toxin. Most common is a slight headache. In very rare instances a heaviness of the eyebrow or eyelid can occur, but this is temporary and completely reversible within days or weeks. Some other rare side effects include mild bruising and swelling at the injection sight, dryness of the eyes and mouth, brief visual disturbances, skin rash and itching.

Will My Facial Expression Be Affected?
Your facial expression will become more relaxed, but by no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural.

Who Will Do My Botulinum Toxin Treatment?
